I reported to AOCS at NAS Pensacola, FL on August 6, 1968 to start flight training and earned my Naval Aviator wings in October, 1969. I then reported to SERE school at Little Creek, VA from November to December 1969, completed UH-1B gunnery school at Ft. Rucker, AL, then reported for duty at Helicopter Attack Light Squadron Three, (HAL-3) in March 1970. I started as a co-pilot, then qualified as an attack helicopter aircraft commander (AHAC), then in October 1970 qualified as a fireteam leader, (FTL). I departed for CONUS in March 1971, and reported for duty at Helicopter Minesweeping Squadron 12 (HM-12) flying the CH-53 A. I made Lieutenant on November 1, 1971. I applied for and got an early out of the Navy on January 18, 1972.
