GREW UP IN IPSWICH, MA, SMALL TOWN NORTH OF BOSTON ON THE COAST. MY DAD WAS A MARINE WHO SERVED IN WW II FIGHTING IN South Pacific ISLAND CAMPAIGNS. ENTERED THE MARINE CORPS ON DELAYED ENLISTMENT PROGRAM WITH FOUR HIGH SCHOOL FRIENDS. LANDED DANANG, VIETNAM ON JANUARY 2, 1968. SERVED WITH THE 1ST BATTALION, 7TH MARINES, 1ST MARINE DIVISION. OUR REGIMENTAL HEADQUARTERS WAS ON HILL 10. I WAS THE BATTALION SUPPLY SERGEANT WITH H&S COMPANY. ALSO PARTICIPATED IN COMBAT PATROLS, PERIMETER SECURITY, REACTIONARY FORCE AND WAS A RIFLE SQUAD LEADER ON OPERATION MAMELUKE THRUST. THIS OPERATION TOOK US UP INTO THE QUE SON MOUNTAINS OVERLOOKING THOUNG DUC RIVER VALLEY AND THE ARMY SPECIAL FORCES CAMP AT THOUNG DUC. PARTICIPATED IN ROAD SWEEP SECURITY FOR ENGINEERS AND BRIDGE SECURITY. WILL NEVER FORGET THE MARINES I MET AND WENT UP AGAINST THE VC AND NVA WITH....THE MOST CARING, HARD CORPS, DECENT YOUNG MEN I HAVE EVER KNOWN. SEMPER FIDELIS. AT 19 YEARS OF AGE I WAS MERITORIOUSLY PROMOTED TO SERGEANT E5 AND MADE A SQUAD LEADER. MY SQUAD WAS MADE UP OF GUYS FROM CHICAGO, TENNESSEE, New York, OHIO, ARIZONA AND MASSACHUSETTS. WE WERE ALL YOUNG AND LOOKED OUT FOR EACH OTHER. WE KEEP IN TOUCH OVER THE YEARS AND HAVE MET AT REUNIONS.
