Served 6 years duty in the USMC, 3 years as an enlisted man achieving the rank of Cpl. E-4. Two years aboard ship on the USS Independence, CVA 62. 5 months of that tour was served in the Gulf of Tonkin off the coast of Vietnam conducting combat flight opns.
Attended 41st OCC at Quantico in Sept 1966 under the meritorious NCO program. Commissioned a 2/Lt. Oct 1966, and then attended The Basic School 3-67 class at Quantico graduating in March 1967. Selected MOS 0302 and sent to Vietnam on May 22, 1967. Assigned as 1st. Platoon Cmdr. Golf Co, 2nd Bn. 5th Marines, 1st Mar. Div. at An Hoa combat base. Completed 7 months as an Infantry Plt Cmdr. Bid on an Aerial Observer position and was selected 1 of 4 out of 18 applicants. Served another 7 months in Country as AO earning 430 combat flight hours, 8 Air Medals. Earned secondary MOS of 0805. Returned to CONUS and assigned to Camp Pendleton ITR as M Company Cmdr. Put 13 companies through ITR, several months as S3 Officer, and then opted to get out of the USMC in Oct 1969. Did not want to go back to Vietnam.
