Nominated for a Special Assignment by the President in 1968.
Cross-trained by the Navy at North Island Naval Air Station to be a Plane Captain on the RP-2E Neptune, a long range anti-submarine aircraft from WW II.
Assigned to the Naval Air Facility, Cam Rahn Bay, South Vietnam and flew over 550 combat missions with the 1st Radio Research Aviation Company for 374 days in country.
The Army acquired 6 Neptunes from the Navy and converted them for radio reconnaissance purposes flying in northern South Vietnam, North Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia.
