In basic training at Ft Knox I had a bone pull apart in my left foot. It was the sixth week so I was able to watch the training an get credit for it. My orders came down for Ft Polk infantry. I couldn't be sent because of being in a cast. The guys I took basic with left and I stayed at the unit waiting on foot to heal. Just to have something to do I helped process the new guys coming in. I had taken 4 years of typing in school. Orders came down again Ft Polk but got sent back again. The CO asked if I would like to do clerk job I said "beats Ft Polk infantry". He said to go get cast off an he would see what he could do for me. Cast was due to come off anyway. Three days later I had orders for Ft Knox clerical school. From there I went to Okinawa for 16 months as a clerk typist (71B20). If it wasn't for the broken bone in foot I am sure I would have ended up in VM.
