biography
Grew up in Cleveland, and Lakewood, Ohio. I attended and graduated from Lakewood High School. I enlisted in 1954, served until 1958, actually serving for 4 1/2 years. I served as cadre at the South Eastern Signal School at Fort Gordon, GA for about 1 year, and from there I was assigned to MAAG, Vietnam in Cholon, Vietnam, and served there for 2 1/2 years. After an Honorable Discharge in 1958, I worked with the Social Security Administration for 15 years, and subsequently with the Department of Defense Logistics for 15 years before I retired. During my employment years I attended and graduated from Park University in 1996. I was amongst the men who were engaged in the October 21, 1957 Viet Cong attack in front of the Metropole Hotel in Saigon. I married my present wife in 1960, we had 4 children, 2 boys and 2 girls. Sadly, my eldest son died in the mid 1990's. We currently reside in Malta, Ohio, a quiet town in SE Ohio. I remain in touch with numerous comrades with whom I served. One of these men spearheaded our reunion group to have the Vietnam War dates modified by Congress to include the early years of our nation's Vietnam involvement. We are singularly proud of that accomplishment, but Wayne McCaughey's leadership and perseverance were the real reason for our success.
